TPE has the characteristics of environmental protection, non-toxic, high elasticity of rubber, so it is widely used in outdoor sports equipment, such as bicycle handle cover, tension tube, fingerpress, diving frog feet, diving goggles and so on. Careful customers may be concerned about whether the TPE material is irradiated (radiation resistant) or aging resistant.
1. Aging is an unavoidable natural law
Aging is a universal process in nature. The most common one around us is the process of life from birth, growth and aging, which is the most typical aging process. Therefore, whether plastic, elastomer or metal and other materials, are inevitably gradually "old"!
Two, the specific performance of thermoplastic elastomer material aging
From the macroscopic performance decline of products, to a certain extent, it can be analyzed from the microscopic perspective:
• Loss of luster, which is the aging phenomenon of the surface of the product;
• Yellowing, which means chemical bonds within the polymer break or pigments change;
• Fading, indicating pigment discoloration or loss
• The surface of the product is floured, indicating that the polymer has been severely aged
• If the mechanical properties of the product change, such as becoming brittle, brittle, fragile or damaged, it indicates that the inner molecule of the polymer has broken.
 
Three, why thermoplastic elastomer materials will age
1. Macro analysis
Because in polymer processing, the use process, will be affected by heat, oxygen, water, light, microorganism and environmental factors such as chemical medium combination of its chemical composition and structure can produce a series of changes, a corresponding bad physical properties, such as hair hard, brittle, sticky, discoloration, loss of strength and so on, these changes and the phenomenon is called aging.
 
2. Microanalysis
Polymers form excited molecules under the action of heat or light. When the energy is high enough, the molecular chain breaks to form free radicals, which can form a chain reaction within the polymer, further triggering degradation and possibly causing cross-linking.
If oxygen or ozone is present in the environment, it also triggers a series of oxidation reactions to form hydroperoxides (ROOH), which are further broken down into carbonyls.
